HOW MY STYLE HAS CHANGED IN THE PAST YEAR

Hello everyone,

Over the past year my style has drastically changed and I have never been happier with my overall wardrobe. I found that I was always referring to the latest trends and items I saw on others, rather then dressing for me and my style. Don’t get me wrong I still follow trends and get inspiration from people but I simply use it has guideline based on what I know I like, my body type and lifestyle. As time passes I think that our style evolves with us and I find is so interesting to take a step back to see what has changed. Your style is a reflection of you and the stage you are in your life so I encourage you to do the same and look at how your style has changed in the past year, 2 years and so on and reflect on why you think it has changed in such a way. I know for me it has to do with simply getting older, student life,  and my overall likes and dislikes. I hope you enjoy this post and it allows you to reflect on your own style evolution as well.

Neutrals

When looking at my closet the only colours I can see are neutrals with the exception of red. You can find numerous amounts of white, black, grey and creme pieces of clothing throughout my wardrobe. In the past I always tried to pull off colour, and although colour is fun and makes a statement it never felt like me. Therefore when going through my wardrobe I basically got rid of all the colour and stuck to the neutral tones that I felt best in. I also find that sticking to neutral tones makes the most affordable pieces look more luxurious which is a helpful tip!

Back to basics

Over the past year I found myself straying away from bold and statement pieces and instead choosing basic pieces that can be worn time and time again. Items such as hoodies, simple blouses, jean jackets, t-shirts. Although some might call this boring, I think that it makes it easier to create a bunch of different outfits. In addition everything works together and can be worn for any occasion. Simplicity with a couple statement pieces to add interest to the look was my motto when it came to styling this past year.

Investment Pieces

2019 was the year I decided that I was going to stop buying a bunch of low quality pieces that inevitably fall apart after a few washes and instead invest in a fewer high quality pieces. I found this has made such a difference in my overall style. You can really see and feel the difference when you invest a little more money into your wardrobe and I promise you won’t regret it. Instead of buying 3 low quality sweaters from a store like Zara I purchased 1 higher quality sweater from Aritzia for example. I was able to create a capsule wardrobe for myself with items that I can wear time and time again.

Comfort

Comfort has become a key part of my style over the past year. By this I don’t mean constantly wearing sweatpants and sweaters, which don’t get me wrong I do very often. Instead that I am only purchasing items that I can wear and not worry about it being adjusted constantly,  it getting wrinkled or it making me uncomfortable during the process of wearing it. I came to the realization that what I’m wearing should make me feel good and allow me to live my life comfortably.  For example although off the shoulder tops look pretty any slight motion causes it too move out of place leaving me to constantly adjust it. There are so many ways to look stylish but still feel comfortable, I simply swapped out off the shoulder tops for a tank top. No adjustments required, I can just go about my day and not worry.
