HOW TO OWN YOUR STYLE: TIPS FOR STEPPING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Hello everyone,

When it comes to fashion everyone always says “I really need to step out of my comfort zone”. For some people stepping out of their comfort zone means adding colours, accessories or prints that they don’t normally wear. A lot of people feel like they “need” to do this in order to elevate their style, however I think that if adding these things is not true to you and your own style then their really isn’t a point. In the end you won’t truly like what your wearing and it will be hard to style. This relates back to my last post where I talked all about how to find your forever pieces.

HOW TO BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE AND SHOP FOR FOREVER PIECES

It is so important to own your style, weather it’s preppy, chic, boho, sporty etc. Adding an element such as colour to your wardrobe to “step out of your comfort zone” when you love and feel best in neutrals is pointless. Stay true to what you like, and if you do want ways to spice up your style there are always ways to do that without straying far. If you are someone who wants to do a wardrobe overhaul and really add in some unexpected elements I think that is great as well, colours, patterns, and textures can allow you to do that easily. In this post I am going to give you all of my tips to step out of your comfort zone while also staying true to your personal style.

BE CONFIDENT

The first and most important tip that I want to mention is to BE CONFIDENT! No matter what you are wearing, confidence is the most fashionable thing you can wear. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you have to dress a certain way or change elements of your style. If you want to step out of your comfort zone do that for you and only for you. One of my favourite things about the fashion world is that everyones style is so unique and personal. When you look good you feel good, so dress in what makes you feel most like yourself and your confidence will immediately shine through. If/when you are adding new elements that are out of your normal comfort zone, it is natural to feel a little odd at first but switch your perspective and say to yourself “yes I am owning this”, this may happen instantly or it may happen slowly. However, if you do find the item just sitting in your closet don’t worry, it just wasn’t the right item for you.

THE TUCK AND ROLL

Stepping out of your comfort zone can simply be achieved by “the tuck and roll” which adds dimension and elevates any look. By tucking in your shirt, or rolling the cuffs of your jeans or tops you look like you spent so much time on your look when it was only a couple seconds. This is a great starting point and a very simple way to step out of your comfort zone. I always try to implement either the tuck and/or roll when getting ready to make a look less basic.

ACESSORIES, ACCESSORIES, ACCESRORIES

The next tip I have for you all is to simply add accessories to an outfit. Belts, hats, bags, jewellery are all my favourite accessories to elevate any look. For example if I am wearing a white t-shirt and some high waisted jeans, simply by using my last tip of tucking the shirt in and adding a belt I have made the look so much more interesting. If your a t-shirt and jeans person, don’t feel like you have to wear a blouse instead, simply add the elements I just listed. You have the same bones of the outfit but now it looks like you put so much more time into the look. You can even go further and add your favourite jewellery pieces. Stack some rings, put on some earrings and your good to go. You’ve stepped out of your comfort zone but are still true to you.

BUY THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT

The fourth tip I have to step out of your comfort zone is to buy the same item that you normally would but buy it in a different colour, or pattern this time. This way the item is still the right fit and style but you are adding an unexpected element. If something catches your eye, look to see if it comes in other colours or patterns than you normally wear. Buy the classic heel in red rather then your usual black. Buy the bag in pink rather tan. Get that necklace in silver rather then gold. By doing so you are still selecting items that you otherwise would of bought but this way you are stepping out of your comfort zone a little.

ADD ONE ITEM OF COLOUR OR PATTERN AT A TIME

I think a key step to going out of your comfort zone while staying true to your style is to add one new element at a time, weather it be an item with a colour or pattern that you wouldn’t normally wear. For example this can be done by wearing a orange blazer instead of a your usual black blazer but keep the other elements of your outfit the same as your normally would. This is a good way to step out of your comfort zone while not getting overwhelmed with the change.

STAY IN THE SAME COLOUR FAMILY AND USE PRINTS AND TEXTURES INSTEAD

Last but not least buy items that are in your same colour family. This tip is best explained with an example. Let’s say your like me and you have an un-denying love for neutrals and you just can’t bring yourself to buy something with colour or crazy patterns. To still step out of your comfort zone turn to textures and prints within the same colour family. The other week I was buying a pair of heeled sandals, they came in 4 colours; black, white, tan and a neutral snake skin. I could of went for the basic tan colour but instead I thought why not be more bold and get the snake skin pair. They are still very neutral which is true to my style and the colour family that I wear but the print will add dimension and interest to the outfit. I am stepping out of my comfort zone by getting the snake skin print but staying true to my style cause its still a neutral colour.
