HOW I PUT AN OUTFIT TOGETHER

Hello everyone!

I got a request a few weeks ago to put together a post about how I put an outfit together. I thought it was such a great idea as there is a process I go through when styling my outfits. A lot of people come to me for styling because they don’t know where to start when putting an outfit together. It can all seem overwhelming. I hope you all find this post helpful in putting your own looks together. If you are interested in styling contact me through this link and I will put together looks the feel true to you and your style!

Happy styling!

  1. WHERE AM I GOING?

When picking an outfit I always stop and think about what I am doing in that moment or that day. Nowadays that does not exceed beyond my living room or bedroom but at the time where life was normal this was always the first thing I did. Having an idea of where I am going allows me to pick the most appropriate outfit for the weather and vibe.

2. PICK THE VIBE

I then proceed to think about the vibe I want for my outfit. This vibe can be dependent on where I am going like I said in the first step or based on what I am feeling in the moment. Sometimes I want to be comfy, sometimes I want to be chic and other times I want to be a little of both. Picking a vibe then allows me to brainstorm possible pieces that will allow me to achieve that look. For example if I want to have a chic vibe that day a blazer, a knit sweater and some killer leather boots will come to mind.

3. LOOK AT PINTEREST FOR INSPO

On my Pinterest I have a Pinterest board that is dedicated to outfit ideas. Whenever I am scrolling on Pinterest and see a cute outfit or something that inspires me I will add it to the board. When I am getting ready and lacking inspiration, or want to recreate a look I will always refer to it. A lot of the time I find that what I am pinning is a good representation of what styles I am liking at the time and what is going on in my life. For example now that we are in lockdown a large chunk of my board consists of the best loungewear outfits.

4. SELECT A KEY PIECE

Once I have thought about what I am doing that day, my vibe and looked at some inso pics I then select one key piece that I will build my outfit around. This pieces can be anything- a blazer, a bag, a pair of denim, shoes, you name it. The point of this step is to have a base to which you will build your entire outfit around. For example if I am going for brunch with friends and want a girly vibe I will select a ruffled blouse as a starting point.

5. BUILD AROUND THAT KEY PIECE

Building around the key piece that I have selected is the next step. Going off the previous example where I selected a ruffled blouse for brunch with friends (in a figurative, non-covid world) I would then select pieces that complemented that piece. This can be in terms of style, colour, length, fit, and even texture. I recommend going one piece at a time. This is a walk not a sprint. In this case I may select a pair of straight leg light wash jeans, with some nude strappy sandals and clutch and some gold jewellery. In doing so I am adding different textures and balancing the outfit with the denim. In adding a pair of nude strappy sandals and a clutch to breaks up the look and keeps within the neutral colour pallet. Lastly the gold jewellery makes the outfit pop and stultifies the girly vibe.

6. LOOK AT THE COMPLETED LOOK AND CHANGE ELEMENTS IF NECESSARY

Lastly I take a look in the mirror and see if I am happy with the look. I see if it matches the occasion and overall vibe I was going for as well as if it makes me feel good and confident. Even going through all of these steps does not ensure a perfect outfit every time. Sometimes I have to go through a system of trial and error to get it just right. If a piece looks off I will look in my closet and see if I have something to substitute it with. I just try things out. Sometimes its just the colour of something that needs to be changes, a slightly different shoe height or a belt needs to be added.
