MY BEDROOM MAKEOVER

This summer I decided it would be a great idea to give my room a total makeover! As I began to figure out my style and what I liked I always had an itch to redo my room to make it a greater reflection of me. I am someone who has a great appreciation for spaces that are decorated in a unique way hence, why I spend a lot of my time discovering and going to trendy restaurants and stores because their designs truly inspire me. I found that I was constently going to places that I found inspiration in however was not finding any in my own space where I spend most of my time. Therefore I wanted to make my room a welcoming and warm space that I could spend hours in and was a reflection of me. This is where the idea for a total makeover began.

Where did I get my inspiration from?

There are many places that I look to for inspiration. As I said before a lot of it comes from the places that I discover or visit. This can be from their wallpaper, colour pallets, furniture design and placement, and lastly from artwork.  All of these aspects come together to create an overall vibe and feel for the space that I take inspiration from to recreate myself.  For a long time I took pictures of things that I really love, whether it be the way they designed a bookshelf or organized artwork and saved it in an album that I referred to when designing my room. Pintrest is another place that I got a ton of my inspriation from. I would spend hours scrolling through home decor posts and pinning anything that sparked my attention to my interiors board. This came in handy as another place to look when choosing what the I wanted to do with my room. An important thing to note is that my inspiration came from many places, rather then just one source. I sometimes would take a picture of a whole place even if I just liked something as simple as a stack of books. Different elements that I loved all came together to create the space that I have today.

What vibe/look was I going for?

I wouldn’t say that I have a defined style that has its own clear cut label, hence why I took inspiration from multiple places to develop an overall look that to me is just perfect. Maybe to some people it may seem like things don’t necessarily work together in a “design” sense however it is the greatest reflection of me and what I love. I knew that I wanted to incorporate a lot of natural elements and textures while still keeping it chic and classy.  I wanted my room to be cozy and relaxing while also being a stylish and open space. With this idea in mind I used it as my starting point as to how I was going to make everything work together. If you were to give my vibe a name I guess you could call it “Natural Chic”.

How did I start?

I first started by selling the existing furniture in my room that I found too big for the space in order to in-vision what I could do with the layout. I decided that the less furniture, the better in order to have a lot more space to move and for the room to feel bigger and brighter. I then started looking online for pieces that went with the “natural chic” look I was going for.

When looking for a wide range of furniture pieces look no further then Wayfair. I got everything for my room from there and it all came super fast. However I do recommend preparing yourself to spend countless hours building everything.  I am proud to say I built it all myself with only a few injuries and tears but that’s another story. It was so fun to have the freedom to pick everything that fit my overall vibe perfectly and begin to create my new space. I am going to provide links to everything below if you are interested!

What was your colour pallet and how where decor pieces choosen?

To showcase the natural side of my “Natural Chic” vibe I wanted a lot of warm tones and greenery in the space. For the chic side I knew I wanted to incorporate golds and some black and white elements as well. I got all my furniture in white and made sure to select pieces that had gold hardware in order to do this. Thus a large part of my chic vibe would be in the furniture pieces themself and I could then add the natural element through decor. HomeSense is one of my all-time favourite places to go for home decor stuff, I could and have on many occasions spent hours walking around the store. I went in search for fake plants and picked some of my favourites, each with white vases to stick to the colour scheme. Another item that I was so happy to have found was a woven basket that I thought would add such a cozy element once it was filled with blankets and was truly representative of the textures and natural vibe I wanted. I also made sure to raid the candle section. I picked out ones that again where both chic and had natural elements. For the artwork above my bed I wanted to keep it very sleek and minimal so I got black frames and put in photos from magazines I already had and placed a really fun gold spike in the middle for an unexpected touch.

What really elevated the space?

Once I had everything together I needed to get a couple more things in order to elevate the space to give it the feel that I wanted it to have. One of the things I did was I looked on wayfair for a woven tapestry and found this one that I thought was just perfect. I liked that it wasn’t too bohemian, but was still fun and had hints of gold to compliment the other aspects of gold in the room. To make the space very open and relaxing I also added a hymalian salt lamp and a diffuser which I feel made a big difference in setting the tone. To add some extra texture to my room I added a throw blanket to the end of my bed which was the perfect blend of the grey and creme aspects of the space, and since it is on the focal point of the room it allowed everything to come together.

What are my favourite parts of the space?

There are so many little areas of my room that I love. One of the main ones is my bed and in particualr my head board. I wanted to go with something that was different and more modern. Tufting was not something I was interested in, however I didn’t want it to be just plain grey. So when I found this one that was simple but not too simple I bought it right away. I love how it is such a focal point of the space and compliments the colours in the room super well. Another area that I really love is my dresser. My inspiration for how to decorate my dresser came from countless Pinterest pins. I knew I didn’t want it to have the traditional things like a perfume tray and jewlary, I wanted it to be very clean and more styled up. One of the posts I found had a stack of coffee table books with a candle on top and I loved how that looked so I incorprated onto my dresser. I then found two gorgeous white vases at Homesense to add another element. The vase of greenery and mirror brought it all together and made it exactly how I wanted it.
