2022 FALL FASHION TRENDS

Hello everyone!

Fall is right around the corner and I can’t wait for fall fashion this year. Fall is when my personal style shines the most as I love layering and utilizing different items to build a look. After doing research for this blog post I noticed that a lot of trends are related to an overall look. These looks include 90s minimalism, Equestrian, Aviation Nation and Biker Chic. I will be organizing the post according to these overall style personas to make it easy for you to pick which direction you want to take your wardrobe this season.

90s Minimalism

One of my favourite overarching trends for this season is the ’90s Minimalism trend. This trend follows the natural progression of the fashion cycle as trends from past decades are returning in a big way. During the summer we saw the Y2K trend returning with baby tees, mini skirts and fun prints. However, the big trend for fall is paired back 90s minimalism. It’s the “That girl”, “Clean girl” aesthetic that everyone is loving with leaders such as Matilda Djerf. To achieve this trend you want to focus on oversized button-downs, oversized blazers, tailored trousers, basics and maxi skirts.

Tank Top

Tank tops are a trend this fall but to most, they are a staple in their wardrobe. This trend relates to the minimalism trend as it tones down any outfit. It’s a staple that can be paired with tailored pants, layered under a sweater or worn with a button-up

Oversized Silhouettes

Although we are looking at timeless items like trousers and blazers, what makes them unique to this season is their oversized fit. I would advise looking for already oversized items or going up 2 sizes when purchasing your pieces. I think this trend adds such a cool girl element to an otherwise minimal outfit. It’s the pop your outfit is looking for to make it super high fashion.

Maxi Skirts

Continuing with 90s minimalism, you want to look for maxi skirts this season. We saw them everywhere during spring/summer and now they are being carried over into fall. You want to look for a slim and tube-like fit. I envision wearing maxi skirts with chunky knits and riding boots. They will be a great alternative to pants this coming season.

Equestrian

Preppy fashion is back on the rise. To me, it is the fall version of the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic that everyone is obsessed with. Think elbow patch blazers (or patches in general), quilted jackets and riding boots. You’re going to want to look for items that are wool, tweed and leather. All of these fabrics when paired together will create a beautiful layered look for the season.

Bohemian

Fashion sites are referring to this trend as bohemian but I think that organic is a better-suited term. Under the umbrella of the equestrian trend, this trend relates to slow fashion by utilizing vintage and pre-loved items. The colours are earthy and grounded. Think browns, terra cottas, creams and burgundys. To achieve this look you want to find fabrics that are organic and random (patches). I think this trend is good to balance out with some tailored items mixed in.

Caramel Tones

As stated previously this fall we are looking at colours that are very grounded and muted. Colours in the brown and caramel colour family were seen all over the runway.

Biker Chic

If minimalism isn’t your thing then the biker chic trend is for you! This trend references leather, lace-ups, reinforcements and metal embellishments. Think very edgy, goth and moody.

Head-to-toe leather looks

This trend takes monochrome up a notch with head-to-toe leather looks. I am obsessed with this trend as you can take it in so many directions. You can make it chicer by using very minimal pieces or you can be super extra with buckles, embellishments and different leathers. To achieve this trend you want to look for leather boots, pants, motto or biker jackets and trenches. A head-to-toe leather look is just so badass and I can’t wait to see all the leather looks this season.

Stompy Moto Boots

To take this trend further you want to look for a pair of chunky leather boots. It’s best if the boots have details like steel toe caps, lace-ups, and metal embellishments.

Sequins

This season is leaning towards electricity and movement under the biker trend. Items with sequins demand attention and pair beautifully with leather fabrics.

Take Flight

Aviation nation is taking over the fashion scene this season. Bomber jackets and varsity jackets (both minimal and crazy) were seen all over the runway. Designers are pairing them with fancier items such as silk midi skirts, dress pants and heels rather than the traditional jeans and sneakers look.

Other Trends to Keep in Mind

Oversized bags

Over the past couple of seasons, we have seen the return of the small shoulder bag. This season expect the shoulder bag trend to take a turn to the oversized side. Bottega Veneta has been leading this trend, with influencers and celebrities seen wearing the Small Jodie Bag. Think slouchy rather than structured to go along with that minimal and effortless fall vibe. I love this trend as it’s very different from what we are used to. In contrast to all the small bags we have been carrying for years, oversized bags will be so fun to style.

Cuffed Jeans

An easy trend to take advantage of this fall is cuffing your jeans. This trend can be done easily with any pair of denim you already have. It adds a cool factor to any outfit!

Clogs and Mules

Clogs and mules are the shoes of the season. Birkenstock Boston Clogs kickstarted this trend, as they have been super popular on Tik Tok for months. Many designers have jumped on this trend, releasing other elevated styles. I love how clogs and mules look with jeans and trousers. They are both laid back, cool and comfortable all at the same time.

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are making a comeback this season! I love how minimal and effortless flats look paired with a pair of straight-leg denim. Brands are coming out with so many great colours for the season.

Where is my style headed this fall?

I have put a lot of thought into where I want my fall wardrobe to go this year. I have been making changes to both my style and shopping patterns and therefore want to take a more classic and timeless route for fall. I want to build a more sustainable wardrobe and shop less, therefore basics and neutral tones are on my list. After a summer full of bold colours and prints I am naturally gravitating to some minimalism as well. Due to this, my style is going to be following under the 90s Minimalism umbrella. I am thinking easy button-downs, oversized blazers, tailored trousers, maxi skirts, basic white tees and long sleeves. My looks overall will be paired back and have a low-key luxury element with minimal logos and more timeless silhouettes that speak for themselves.
