SMALL CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS

Hello everyone,

With all of this time on my hands I decided to get my spring cleaning done by starting with my closet. Around this time I always get the cleaning bug and want to declutter everything in sight. I will usually do this about twice a year when I switch my winter wardrobe to my spring wardrobe and vice versa. I thought I would take you along through the process of how I did it. My closet space is very limited therefore I need to get creative when it comes to organizing and figure out the best ways to maximize my space. All these tips and tricks are budget friendly and easy ways to transform your closet for spring. If any of you try out these tips yourself I would love to see your transformation pictures. Hope you all enjoy and happy cleaning!

TIP 1: TAKE EVERYTHING OUT

What I always make sure to do when cleaning my closet is to remove absolutely everything, this way I am able to clean the inside of the closet itself and take inventory of what I have. I remove all my past seasons clothes, top bins and anything on the floor. It amazes me every time how much dust builds up on the floor. It feels good to start with a clean slate before putting all my clothes back in. I will vacuum the floor up and dust the top ledge.

TIP 2: ADD AN EXTRA LEVEL

I found that having all my clothes on one rail was just becoming too crowded, making it harder to reach things and get items out, leading to even more of a mess. I thought it would be a great idea to get an extra rod, to maximize the lower space of my closet. This one that I purchased from amazon was great as it allowed me to hang my jeans and shorter items from it, creating more space at the top.

TIP 3: COLOUR COORDINATE AND ITEM COORDINATE

When I’m in the process of putting things back in my closet I find that the best way is to organize them by item type and colour. By this I mean I separate my clothes by type; dresses, tops, skirts, jackets, bottoms. Then I organize by colour; whites, blacks, neutrals etc. In doing so the items can be placed in the correct location based on their length (this is especially useful if you have a small closet like mine), I know exactly where everything is and it is all colour ordinated. My whole closet is functional but also pleasing to the eye.

TIP 4: SHOE RACK

I have found that having a shoe rack is my closet is so helpful. Without it I found that my shoes would end up all around the house or in my room. This way I have everything in one place so when i’m getting ready I can do it all at once. I will link a similar one below!

TIP 5: STORAGE BINS

A great organization tip is to use bins to hold extra items and accessories. I used to have pink fabric boxes but found they were very impractical because they were so flimsy and didn’t have a top. These ones that I got are white, meaning they are more understated. As well they have a lid so everything can be hidden and stacked on top of each other if you need any additional storage.

TIP 6: ADD AN ADDITIONAL DRAWER UNIT

I purchased this drawer unit last year and have loved having it ever since. Having a small closet has it’s challenges, therefore having this unit where I can put additional clothes that I don’t reach for as often is great. I also means that I can place things on top of it such an my perfume tray and hats. I got this one from walmart, it was super inexpensive as well!
